9 Secrets to Being Great

Shirley Picture PuzzlesToday I’m remembering a great: a great grandma, mom, wife (of 50+ years), friend, community leader, youth mentor, bowler, shorthandist, cook … just an all-around great woman.

You know that phrase, “They don’t make them like they used to.” That pretty much sums up Shirley.

ShirleyWeddingWe lost her a year ago today, and I’m been feeling a bit melancholy, I’m not going to lie.

But there wasn’t anything about Shirley that was melancholy. Heck, the day she passed, she went out with friends to see a barber shop quartet and have cocktails. She was 91, mind you.

So, I’m doing my best to direct my energy toward the positive things about Shirley—and there are a lot of them to choose from.

Even if you didn’t know her,  here are nine Shirley-inspired ideas for living life to the fullest, from someone who spent nine decades doing just that.

9 Secrets to Being Great

  1. Wear something dashing, preferably yellow.
  2. Work hard. Play hard.
  3. Laugh freely and often.
  4. Speak openly and honestly.
  5. Never underestimate the healing powers of a sunset cocktail.
  6. Take time to hand write a letter to a friend.
  7. Daydream about some place warm … or better yet go.
  8. Cook something to share.
  9. Listen to music that makes you want to sing and dance.

May these things keep you young at heart, just as they did for Shirley.
